The World of Salsa

“SALSA”, which in the 60s and 70s came to describe contemporary Afro-Latino-Caribbean dance music, is attribute to various sources and events. The most often-heard story is that Latin music promoters and record label owners coined the term as a merchandising ploy to market a variety of genres of Latin music. However, the earliest record of the word’s usage was much earlier, in the 1933, when Cuban composer Ignacio Piñero wrote and recorded, with his ensemble Sexteto Nacional the tune “Echale Salsita” (“Pour on the sauce”)
